The media sphere in North Macedonia continues to face slow progress and serious challenges, despite positive trends in international media freedom indices. Sustainable funding, the application of professional standards, and improving the status of journalists remain open issues, while the media sphere deals with rapid technological changes affecting the form, content, and role of the media, as well as the communication habits of the audience.
The research “The Future of the Media in North Macedonia – Considerations of Key Actors” analyzes the perceptions of citizens and media professionals regarding journalism, the media industry, media usage and trust, the demands of citizens from the media and their needs, as well as the state of democracy in the country. The findings show that citizens have low trust in the media because they perceive them as dependent on political centers of power, and information anxiety is rising due to a sensationalist approach and misinformation.
The conclusions indicate that the future of the media will be shaped by technological and digital innovations, but journalists remain key to ensuring authenticity, credibility, and the verification of content.
